Rep Power: 527 Glad/Ziplock Steamer Bags I recently cooked some fish and veggies in the new steamer bags. They worked great, but I am wondering if there is a way to use regular ziplock bags for this purpose?

I have always used the thick freezer bags for putting my egg beaters, canadian bacon and fat free cheese in then fropping it into boiling water for 15 minutes and the bag held up fine. How much do the steam bags run and where do you find them? Thanks Tammy

Rep Power: 104243 you can use parchment paper -or tin foil in the oven/toaster oven and it's the same effect...
or just use a glass dish with some cling wrap on top...

I think anywhere from 3-4 dollars for about 10 bags. I used some of the bags over when cooking carrots because they didn't leave much of a mess. You can get them at any grocery store I believe.

I was looking at the steamer bags the last time I was at the store and almost purchased some.
It suddenly dawned on me that I've been successfully steaming food for decades in the microwave and oven without some gimmicky bags.
In the microwave I use a regular glass Corning Ware dish with a glass top. In the oven I use the foil packet approach.
No need to spend money on expensive bags when you probably have all the things you need already at home.

Rep Power: 0 I love those bags too! I bring a bag of uncooked broccoli to work in the morning. At lunch time, I just put the bag in the microwave and I get nice hot steamed broccoli and 3 minutes!

And if you must feel you are really "steaming" your food, you can find a little steamer basket that fits into any sauce pan. It runs under a couple of bucks and I use that when steaming veggies to go into a pasta salad.
